Mr. Hendon,

I certainly agree that doing anything "mindlessly" is not good. Even our mental decisions and actions that occur without cognitive awareness are not "mindless". We must all be responsible in order to really learn and realize our freedom. However, we should also be willing to recognize that someone with experience beyond our own most likely has something for us to listen to and learn from. A good teacher will not let the dynamic you describe occur in the dojo.

i agree with the teachings of O'sensei, and have enjoyed many years of aikido practice. what bothers me is the hive mentality of established dojos, placing the ideas of the shihan, even in matters not concerning martial arts, over one's own. what results is the "jim jones compound" living arrangement, with followers mindlessly carrying out the sensei's wishes. beware the seductive nature of pleasing the master.
